Work : BG Group & KPO Kazakhstan
I work for BG Group (originally British Gas Exploration & Production) and have been with the company for more than 18 years. I am now working in Reading UK as IT Network Manager, responsible BG's global networks in Europe, Middle East & Africa region. My group of network architects and engineers are engaged in major projects to transform the capacity and quality of the infrastructure and communications in all BG assets in UK and overseas. At the same time we provide level 3 support to the outsouced service-providers who manage the day-to-operations.
For 11 years I was working as IT & Telecommunications Manager for KPO (Karachganak Petroleum Operating) in Aksai, North-West Kazakhstan. BG is one of 4 Joint Venture Partners. Over there we work month-on/month-off as the oilfield is in a fairly remote location with extreme weather conditions between +40c in the summer to -40c in the winter.
Due to month-on/month-off rotation, jobs are shared with another person (e.g. from ENI, Italy). As IT & Telecom Manager there is responsibility for 140 employees supporting approx 4,700 computer and telephone users in Kazakhstan and London. Whilst on-shift, work is 12 hours a day and 7 days a week. I was very happy indeed working there and have some of the greatest friends and colleagues there in Kazakhstan. I was very upset to leave as it had really grown to be a major part of my life.
